THE WINTERPORT BAPTIST CHURCH---ITS EARLY JOURNEY

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE WINTERPORT BAPTIST CHURCH

A Brief History (comprised by Marion Ryan)

Winterport Baptist Fellowship was established in September 1982.  Worship Services were held at the parsonage on Coles Corner Road (Eric Mclaughlin house) and at the home of Rev. Howard and Gail Roberts (moving here in February, 1983), and from April 10, 1983 until a move to the community building on Park Drive on October 9, 1983.
A charter Sunday celebration was held April 24, 1984 at the Leroy H. Smith School gymnasium with approximately 200 attending.  On this day twenty-one received membership in the fellowship of the church.
A land search committe consisting of Pastor Howard Roberts, Richard Doble, and Alvin Trundy was formed on April 26, 1986 with the present location decided upon.  The first building committee was formed on June 21, 1987 consisting of seven members of which three are still attending the church today.
The Winterport Baptist Fellowship was incorporated on June 1, 1987 and thus became Winterport Baptist Church.  The building site was purchased on August 20, 1987.  A special service of dedication on the land was scheduled to be held at the church site on September 20, 1987 but due to rainy weather it was held at the community center instead.
May 12, 1988 was the day of ground breaking in preparation of the building process.  With the foundation and concrete flooring completed we were able to have our very first service at our new site.
During the summer and fall of 1988 the building was closed in and a cap was placed over it.  This was all done by dedicated volunteer workers.
Finally, the big day arrived and the move was made  from the community center into our own facility on January 23, 1989.  On Sunday January 29, we began holding regular worship services at the new site.
On April 23rd, a special service was held celebrating the fifth anniversary of charter Sunday and the first phase dedication ceremony of our building with approximately 120 in attendance.
The second floor was contracted out to be built during 1992-1993 and we officially moved upstairs into the sanctuary for the first service on December 19, 1993.  The interior of the upstairs was completed with wains coating, lights, carpeting, and new pews during years 1995-1996.
In October 1998, the foundation for a thirty foot addition was put into place at the back of the church.  In March of 1999, work began on framing up the walls for the downstairs.  This building phase was completed by the end of 1999.
